  • Can I see the Northern Lights at Sky Lodging?
Yes! The best time to see Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis) is during winter months (September to April), when it's dark outside and there are no clouds in the sky. Also, the intensity of the Northern Lights is closely tied to solar activity. Even if all these conditions are met, there is unfortunately no guarantee to spot them - you also need some luck! Fingers crossed 🍀 PS: It's a good idea to use the Aurora forecast app during your stay to check how likely it is that Northern Lights appear above Sky Lodging.
  • How to photograph the Northern Lights?
Here are some basic steps to get you started: 1) Location: Choose a location with minimal light pollution and a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Sky Lodging is a perfect example. 2) Equipment: Camera: Use a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings for better control. Wide-angle lens: A fast wide-angle lens (e.g., f/2.8 or faster) is ideal for capturing more of the night sky. Sturdy tripod: A stable tripod is crucial to avoid camera shake during long exposures. 3) Settings: Manual mode: Set your camera to manual mode to have full control. ISO: Start with an ISO around 800-1600 and adjust as needed to capture enough light without introducing too much noise. Aperture: Use a wide aperture (e.g., f/2.8) to let in more light. Shutter speed: Start with a shutter speed of around 15-30 seconds. Experiment to find the right exposure time for the conditions. Focus: Set your lens to manual focus and focus on a distant object or use the infinity focus point to ensure the stars are sharp. 4) Composition: Consider adding interesting foreground elements to your shots, like trees or mountains, to provide context to the Northern Lights. 5) Timing: Monitor Aurora forecast apps or websites for predictions and plan your shoot accordingly. Usually, the best time is during the darkest hours of the night. 6) Long exposures: Take multiple long-exposure shots (15-30 seconds) to capture the movement and patterns of the Northern Lights. 7) Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment with settings and compositions to find what works best for the specific conditions you encounter. 8) Image processing: Use post-processing software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to enhance your photos, adjusting exposure, color balance, and reducing noise if needed. 9) Remember that capturing the Northern Lights can be a challenge, and conditions can vary, so patience and practice are key. Be prepared for cold weather, and bring extra batteries, as cold temperatures can drain them quickly. Good luck with your Northern Lights photography!
